Do you long for a massage? Getting a massage at home may be easier than you think. Photo by Caleb George on Unsplash

Imagine it. Your day has been long. After dinner, your muscles are stiff and tired. You just want a massage, but you do not want to wait days for an appointment.

If anything, it would just be better to get your massage at home. You pull out your phone and with a few screen taps, you have arranged for a massage therapist to come in an hour.

You know exactly how much it will cost. You know exactly who is coming to your door.

Now all you have to do is choose your massage playlist as you wait for them to arrive.

Is this too good to be true? Actually, it is not. Everyone knows how the apps Uber and Lyft are revolutionizing the cab industry. And how Air Bnb is changing the hotel industry.

But did you know that there are similar apps disrupting the massage industry?

In this post, I am not just going to show you how to get a massage at home using apps. I am also going to go over two other simple ways that you can get a massage at home.

Read on to learn how getting a massage at home is even simpler than you think.

1) Massage Apps

On-demand massage apps are one of the best new options for getting a massage at home. These apps promise to arrive at your house in as little as an hour after booking an appointment providing everything you need from the massage table to the sheets, oils, and music.

Of course, if you want to use your own music or if there is an oil that you prefer to use, that is on the table too. One thing that has really impressed me about these on-demand massage services is their dedication to finding quality professionals.

Inviting a new guest into your house can be intimidating. Even worse, recent events and accusations have tarnished the massage therapy business. As a result, people who could really benefit from massage therapy may avoid it out of fear.

The massage therapists for these two apps go through a rigorous vetting process- they must be licensed, experienced, and pass an interview. I really appreciate how seriously they take the safety of their clients.

These massage apps are mostly available in major cities. If you live in the countryside, you may be out of luck (but don’t worry, I have more great options further down in the article). Also, they don’t necessarily serve the same cities (only one of the services listed below is available in my hometown).

Both of the apps have directories on their websites so it is easy to see if this service is available near you. Let’s look a little closer at these two apps.

Zeel

Zeel is perhaps the older of the two apps. According to their website, they have over 9,000 massage therapists making them one of the largest networks of in-home massage therapists.

I was highly impressed with how seriously Zeel takes safety, not just for their clients but also for their therapists. Not only do they but their therapists through a rigorous screening process but they also require their customers to verify their ID before booking an appointment.

When you make an appointment, you will also receive the name, bio, photo, and massage license number of your massage therapist. This measures not only gives a greater sense of security but also makes the initial meeting less daunting (for those that appreciate that sort of thing).

Zeel offers several different types of massages including:

  • swedish
  • deep tissue
  • sports
  • prenatal
  • sleep
  • couple

One thing that I love about Zeel is that they are very transparent with their customers. Their website navigation is effortless and prices, locations, services, etc. are all readily available on their website making everything almost too convenient (for those of us who tend to impulse buy…)

Overall, Zeel appears to be a really fantastic, convenient choice that values transparency and their customer’s safety. A gift for those who love massage therapy.

Soothe

Soothe is another great app for getting a massage at home. Like Zeel, they are dedicated to the safety of their clients and require their massage therapists to be vetted and certified.

This app seems to really focus on developing the relationship between the massage therapist and the client. This is extremely important, especially if you suffer from pain or another health issue.

Even though you cannot choose your massage therapist initially, you can easily rebook with a therapist that you have already worked with. This sort of feature makes it easy to get a massage that caters to your specific needs.

Soothe offers 5 different types of massage:

  • Swedish
  • deep tissue
  • sports
  • prenatal
  • couple

Overall, Soothe also offers a great deal of transparency. I love that they have a youtube channel with videos about what to expect and how to prepare for the massage.

Everything about this service indicates that they put your comfort and peace of mind first.

2.) Do It Yourself (or have a friend do it for you)

Another option for getting a massage at home is to simply do it yourself. This is one of the most convenient options and all you really need are your own hands (even though tennis balls, foam rollers, and other tools are also an option). In the same vein, you could pair up with a friend or family member and exchange massages.

If you want to do a self-massage, you really need to gain knowledge so that you don’t end up injuring yourself or making your pain worse. There are plenty of great free resources on the internet, including a variety of videos on youtube.

However, I prefer to look at books on the subject. Videos and articles tend to provide a very narrow view of massage therapy and can overlook important subjects such as safety. Books tend to show more of the big picture.

One book that I have found really useful is the Trigger Point Therapy Workbook.

Trigger point therapy focuses on releasing tight spots in the muscle to reduce pain. This book goes deeply into trigger point therapy exploring the history, physiology, techniques, etc. of trigger points.

Some might find that this book gets too technical and complicated. However, I appreciated all of the detail (I’d much rather read a book that is too detailed rather than too vague. Would you?)

I also liked how this book is organized. The chapters are categorized by the parts of the body. At the beginning of each chapter is a pain guide, an “other symptoms” guide, and also a pain illustration guide (for those of us who are more visual).

Overall, I was highly impressed by the organization of this book as well as its impressive depth. It is a great choice if you want to explore self-massage.

3) Massager Machines

Last but not least are massager machines. These are great because they have a variety of sizes, modes, and options. For example, pillow massagers are small and usually have shiatsu nodes to give a deep massage.

Massage cushions are larger and there is much more variation. Some of them only vibrate. These are great for the car. Some of them have shiatsu nodes that run up your entire back and also give a neck massage as an added bonus.

Basically, it is easy to find a massager that is tailored to both your needs and your budget. You don’t have to invest in a full massage chair in order to get a great massage at home.

And don’t discount a massager just because it is small. Many of the smaller massagers are also extremely versatile and you can get more out of them than a larger cushion. You can use a pillow massager on your neck or lower back. You can run a shoulder massager up and down your back. Or you could use them on your feet.

The massage pillow featured above is the Liba Cordless Shiatsu Massager. It has some great features. The battery can last up to 90 minutes. This massager can also heat up to 105 degrees Fahrenheit in 20 minutes.

Radical Relaxation Central has guides to some of the best massagers. You should take a look around to see if there are any massagers that will work for you.

Overall, massagers are an extremely convenient and portable option, whether you want a massage at home, at work, or on the road.

In conclusion, there are plenty of great options to get a massage at home. This post explored how you can use apps to get a massage at home. It also looked at how you can also learn the art of self-massage or simply buy a massage cushion. These three things ensure that you are never far away from your next massage.

Now it’s your turn

Which of these options would you most likely go for? Would you rather have your very own personal masseuse come and visit your home, office, or hotel room?

Or would you love to learn how to give a great massage from a book?

Or would you rather just get a massager, opening up the option of taking a massage with you on the road?

  1. I love the idea of a come to your home massage therapist. Had no idea there was “an App for that”!

  2. HI Eva

No, I didn’t know that we can book the massage therapist through phone app like Uber, Lift, Airbnb O.O

Hmm…When we book through the Zeel, there is another info massage therapist? I know each massage therapist has their own style of massage. Like this massage provider strength is for the deep tissue massage. Another would help you to sleep.

About the ID part. Both parties need to verify the ID of each? then we just take the picture and upload our ID as the booking?

Oh, one more thing I would like to know. Massage therapist usually has their own massage table, and I assume that massage table is not comfortable enough to move around (because of the weight)-> so where we can get massage at home? right in our bed? or the sofa?

Does Zeel have the rebook feature like Soothe?

Thank you for sharing-> wanna give a try 😛 (I tried deep issue and sleep once hehe)

    • I don’t think that you can see the specialty of the massage therapist. That would be a nice feature though. To verify your ID Zeel goes through a 3rd party company. As I read it, it basically seemed like a background check.

The massage therapists bring the massage table to your home for both apps.

With Zeel, you can rebook a massage therapist if you prioritize them (which is basically just a setting on the app that lets you save their profile for later).

I hope that you give these apps a try and that you have a fantastic massage experience.

  3. Holy smokes I love the idea of someone to come to your home and they are well vetted! I also like that you can choose male or female therapists. Do you know if this exists in Canada? I might have to look into it.

I really liked this post, well written and laid out, good information, thorough, and all the links worked well. My only suggestion is that for the several different types of massages link maybe that could go directly to the product page rather than the home page as it saves a step and the home page is linked already.
    Sydney

    • Yes, Soothe is located in some cities in Canada including Toronto and Vancouver. These apps have so many great features.

  4. I love this! I never knew there was such a thing as an app for massages. That’s pretty cool. It is a little scary to have a stranger come to your house. But you’re very thorough on your explanations of each app, and the process it takes. I’m definitely gonna take a look at these apps and download it. I usually have a friend give me a quick one. But I do love this idea of the app. Thank you for teaching me something new.

  5. I never knew such apps even exist but it is actually no surprise that they do. What can be better after a long day at work than relaxing professional massage at home? I personally prefer professional massage so such an app seems like a godsend to me as I really don’t like making appointments and waiting. Thank you for this valuable information – I already started exploring Zeel website.

  6. I did not know that there were so many options for massages, like Zeel and Soothe. Getting a therapeutic massage is a great way to relieve tension in your body. My wife wants to get a couple’s massage, so we’ll do some research in order to find a service that can provide for a romantic evening.

    • That sounds like a great idea, Sam! Couples massages are great and they can be even better at home. Zeel and Soothe both go to great lengths to create a wonderful experience.
